Our route has changed somewhat from our original plans. After touring Rajasthan for six weeks, the heat started to become pretty uncomfortable. The high temperature in Jodhpur was reaching (43 C) 105 F during the day, so we decided to load the bikes on the train and head for Calcutta. From Calcutta we drove north towards Sikkim (the cooler foothills of the Himalayas) and then west into Nepal. We spent a month touring around Nepal and then made our way back into India, entering northeast of New Delhi, through the border town of Banbassa. From there we drove through Uttaranchal, winding through the Himalayan foothills, towards Himachal Pradesh. Next we traveled on parts of the old Hidustan-Tibet Highway taking us east towards Tibet and into the mountain desserts of Himachal Pradesh. From Himachal we took the Manali to Leh Highway heading into Ladakh. The road going to Leh is the second highest navigable road in the world, with some passes going over 5,328 m (16,000 ft.) and it made for some amazing riding. From Leh we headed west towards Kargil and Srinigar. After spending a week on a houseboat in Srinigar, we headed south back towards New Delhi.
